The very first public interest lawyer in China, Guo Jianmei came from humble roots. Her family were impoverished peasants and Jianmei's observation of the hardships and injustice suffered by the women around her, fuelled her evolution. Despite being bullied as a child, for her social status, Jianmei was a top student. She rose through the ranks to become a respected lawyer but chose to deviate from a comfortable and secure career path, to focus on defending the most vulnerable women from injustice, instead.
Carefully balancing her calling against the complexities of life within a strongly patriarchal society and deeply conservative government policies, Jianmei continues striving to protect the most underprivileged women, today.
